Kyivstar superpowers: year results and plans for the future of the national operator

When to expect 5G and VoLTE in Ukraine, why Superpowers appeared, and who orders Big Data analytics — Kyivstar held its final press meeting this year, at which it announced the results of the past year and announced plans for the future.



4G — to the villages!
The meeting was opened by Oleksandr Komarov , CEO of Kyivstar. In his report, he outlined the main vectors of the operator's development strategy. So, this year the operator has been actively engaged in the development of the 4G network in villages and small towns.

According to the operator's own statistics, 4G consumption has increased approximately 3 times in three years. If in 2018 it was 2.3 GB per month per subscriber on average, now it is 7 GB. The number of smartphones with 4G support has increased from 6.5 million in 2018 to 16.6 million in 2021. Today, 90% of the population is covered by 4th generation mobile Internet, and the operator achieved this indicator 2 months earlier than planned. Residents of almost 16 thousand cities and villages have access to 4G communication services.



It should be noted that Kyivstar has the largest LTE900 network in cities: a total of 29 cities are covered, where 780 base stations have been built . LTE900 technology is usually not used in cities, but this step allowed Kyivstar to increase indoor coverage by 10%.

However, each new percentage of population coverage costs more than the previous one. Oleksandr Komarov gave figures for the Zhytomyr region, which is quite compact compared to others. If now 93% of the population there lives in the 4G coverage area and Kyivstar spent 500 million UAH on building this network, then in order to increase the coverage figure to 99% (i.e. increase it by only 6%), another 300 million must be invested . In general, each new base station outside the city costs 10 million UAH (this is the total cost of passive and active equipment).

As for 4G coverage on strategic highways, there albania number data are about 1,830 km of such roads in Ukraine, 90% of which will be covered by 4G by the end of the year. Kyivstar built almost the entire network independently and only in areas with low population density did it cooperate with other operators. In general, the maximum realization of the potential of 4th generation technology (LTE Advanced Pro) in Ukraine is possible within the next 3–4 years. And this also applies to the implementation of voice transmission technology over LTE communication (Voice over LTE – VoLTE). Thus, about 200 thousand contract subscribers already use Voice over LTE (VoLTE) technology today, and more than 60 smartphone models support it. In 2022, VoLTE is planned to be launched for prepaid subscribers.

5G – when to expect it in Ukraine
The future of 5th generation communications in Ukraine is still vague. As Oleksandr Komarov noted: “ I don’t see a horizon now when the 5th generation of communications will be introduced in Ukraine .” Firstly, today only 1.5% of the total smartphone base supports 5G technology. Although by 2025, according to the forecast, this figure will increase to 25%. Secondly, 5G requires very dense construction of sites, in fact, transmitters are placed even on lampposts. And here you can’t do without state support.
