In 2014, CleverPet completed the development and introduced a “smart” pet bowl with the same name.

“The pet world has been longing for something like CleverPet. Playing with this device keeps the pet mentally and physically occupied. Now, when the owner comes home, instead of a bored and anxious dog, he sees a healthy and happy dog,” says Graham Bloom, a dog trainer on the CleverPet team.

A “smart” bowl gives your pet food as a reward for completing tasks with several levels of difficulty. In the simplest version, to get a portion of food, your cat or dog needs to press a button on the bowl when it changes color.

To bring the product to market, the company needed money. CleverPet raised its initial investment through the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. The device received $180,000, instead of the required $100,000.

In 2015, the startup won the Robot Launch robotics competition and raised $120,000 in investment. That same year, CleverPet began shipping devices to customers in a test mode, 12 orders per week, collecting feedback and refining the technology.

"We received a lot of positive feedback in the early stages of using the device. We noticed that dogs prefer to eat food from the CleverPet rather than from a regular bowl. We also saw that pets start to play on their own, they don't need to be forced," says Leo Trottier.

In early 2016, CleverPet won first place in the ShowStoppers LaunchIt category at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. At the same time, Singaporean investment firm Ruvento invested $1.3 million in the startup. In 2017, CleverPet launched the device for sale on its website for $299.

That same year, the company developed a game for a “smart” bowl called Color Match. To get treats, animals have to tap on touch panels on the bowl, changing colors until they match. Over time, the tasks become more difficult as the animals learn to solve them faster.
