Songdo (South Korea)
The South Korean city of Songdo is home to a $40 billion project — the Songdo International Business District, a purpose-built smart city launched in 2002. Its area is 86 sq. km, it consists of 40% green spaces and contains 80,000 apartments.

Sensors monitor building energy consumption. A central pneumatic waste disposal system eliminates the need for garbage collection. Songdo has numerous car charging stations and a total of 25 km of bike paths.

Unfortunately, the city is still unfinished, and less than a quarter of its estimated population lives there. According to visitors, its atmosphere resembles “the emptiness of Chernobyl.” However, not everyone shares this opinion.

of local jobs, as most residents come thailand number data to Seoul in search of work. Five university campuses were not enough to populate it, and significant incentives are needed to attract resident businesses to help make it happen.

Toyota Woven City (Mount Fuji, Japan)
Toyota Motor Co. announced the creation of Woven City at CES 2020. Toyota plans to house 2,000 people on a 0.7 sq km site, including families, retirees, Toyota scientists, and more.

The city's plans include wooden houses powered by hydrogen fuel cells. Photovoltaic panels will generate solar energy on the roofs alongside the energy produced by the hydrogen fuel cells.

Fully autonomous, zero-emission vehicles are available. The Toyota e-Palette autonomous electric shuttles will be used for transportation and delivery, as well as an alternative to mobile retail.

In April, Woven Plant Holdings, a Toyota subsidiary specializing in autonomous technology, acquired Lyft's autonomous transportation unit for $500 million, suggesting the city would be used as a valuable testing ground.

All in all, it looks like an interesting venture. It will be interesting to see how much of the cost will fall on Toyota and whether they can fill the city with enough interested people.
